World Cinema Wednesday

I like this film and I think it’s important for a number of reasons. Chock full of gloom, doom and self mutilation, Antichrist is a bold work of art from uncompromising filmmaker, Lars Von Trier. It is at times very difficult to watch, but if you stick with it you will be richly rewarded. Unless of course, you’re only into rom-coms and Michael Bay films.

A grieving couple retreats to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse. With elements of christian folklore, witchcraft, misogyny and even it’s own twisted brand of romance, Antichrist was called “the most shocking film in the history of the Cannes film festival.”

I cant say how much I adore LVT’s practice as a masochist. I identify deeply. The opening to the film was just unreal- unreal in form, movement, depiction, color ( a new definition of black and white in 2010). The man is genius.
